Grazing Education and Mentorship for Pennsylvania

It’s Friday! And that means its time for another edition of Fridays on the Farm. This week its my pleasure to introduce you to Bill & Sallie Patton.

I recently had the privilege of spending some time with Bill and Sallie while attending the July 11th pasture walk that took place in Franklin County, if you missed it, you can find some pictures of the event on our Instagram page as well as spot some of the videos on our Facebook page.

Bill and his wife Sallie own and operate the 100 acre Patton Family Farm which is 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and three miles from the Ohio state line. He is the fourth generation to work the land and specializes in raising beef cattle, sweet corn, brown eggs from pasture raised chickens and pumpkins.Their products are marketed direct to the consumer, through a local butcher and bakery store and at several CSA markets in Pittsburgh. (As a side note– if you’re ready for some sweet corn you’re in luck! Bill and Sallie just started harvesting their first batch of it yesterday!)

Bill has been doing some form of rotational grazing since 1988. First with dairy cattle and now with beef cattle and layers. Bill and Sallie have been active in attending and hosting grazing field days and are always looking for new and improved management ideas that will promote good conservation practices.

Bill is a graduate of the Williamsport Area CC Dairy Management Program. He and Sallie are the proud parents of a son and daughter and have a grandson they enjoy spoiling.

Some of the questions Bill is happy to answer include: converting from crop land to grazing land, grazing beef cattle and layer chickens, custom grazing dairy heifers and beef cattle and tall grass grazing.

Thanks for your dedication to grazing Bill and Sallie!
